Sacrifice and Resilience

During both World Wars Wokingham did it’s duty.  From Hospitals and Remount Depots in the First World War to storage areas for tanks and ammunition and camps for troops of different nationalities during the Second World War it was an important place for many.  But most poignant is the men and women of this town who fell. We remember them, their stories and the part Wokingham played in the wars.

First World War

In 1911 the population of Wokingham numbered 4,300. By 1918 after 4 years of fighting in conflict around the world, 217 men of the town had given their lives in the service of their country.

Second World War

The Second World War received the same attention from the people of Wokingham as from those who had responded loyally in the First World War.
